Tearmann Institute, Corner Brook, Newfoundland

In the weeks that followed Aiden’s date, things kind of fell into something of a routine. I don’t mean it was boring… well, maybe sometimes it could be, but those were few. It was more like our little group had become comfortable here at Tearmann, like a new shoe finally being broken in or a slightly itchy blouse finally softening against the skin. We had all sort of found our rhythm.

Even Jennifer, who had attended last year, seemed to start feeling more comfortable and was slowly but surely opening up more and more. Not to us, but in general. I’d caught her smiling at people and even chatting with someone in the halls for a few seconds during passing periods. While that might not seem like very much, for an introvert like Jennifer it was pretty damn huge. For a while, our little inner circle were the only people it seemed she could really open up with and be herself. Now, every day brought just a little bit more of that hidden personality to the surface. I really hoped it kept coming, because I could see the subtle transformation in her. While before she had been a mousy, unkempt girl who was also hiding her face, now she was becoming more vibrant and taking care of herself. As I’d suspected from when we’d first met, she was really a very pretty girl. All that had been missing was caring just a little about her appearance and some self-confidence.

Classes were going well too. I found myself continually challenged to improve upon my existing knowledge or gain it brand new. One thing Tearmann did really well, other than teach fey how to use their abilities, was to truly open and elevate the minds of their students. Our teachers taught us how to not only find the answer to a problem, but show us new and creative ways to get there that we hadn’t even considered. It was a way of improving our minds without simple memorization.

While I know the power classes were going well for my friends, I felt like I was doing especially well. Since I was the only student currently on campus that possessed the ability to heal others, I received a lot of individualized attention from Dr. Howard. While I was no where even in the realm of being close to mastering my ability to heal, I had improved to the point that I could mend more significant injuries like broken bones in roughly a minute without experiencing any kind of weakness whatsoever. Dr. Howard had even allowed me to shadow her at the medical center a few times.

So, as Halloween crept to only a day away, we were all feeling pretty good about ourselves and our future.

“I still can’t believe you’re actually going to wear the thing,” Aiden said with a grin as we made the final turn for our morning run.

“That’s probably the third time you said that this morning,” I pointed out, my teeth no longer chattering now that I’d gotten nice and warm from our brisk pace.
